Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee on Niger Delta crisis, Hon Abdul Ningi, yesterday said that oil multinational companies should be held responsible for the lingering crisis in the Niger Delta region, adding that they have not lived up to their social responsibility to their host communities. He made this disclosure while receiving a delegation from Hope for Niger Delta Campaign, a non-governmental organisation based in Netherlands who were at the National Assembly for an interactive session with the ad-hoc committee on the crisis in the Niger Delta.

ABUJA – Members of the House of Representatives yesterday rose in stout defence of the current struggles in the Niger Delta region for justice , political and social emancipation, saying the agitation is for survival.

Reps special Ad-Hoc Committee on Niger Delta which gave its position yesterday against the recent bombardment by government troops, noted that the agitation was for survival.

De milieuactivisten in de Niger Delta van Nigeria zijn vooral bekend van hun ideologische strijd tegen oliemaatschappijen. Maar sinds een paar jaar zijn sommige groeperingen aan het veranderen in criminele organisaties. Van de vreedzame beweging van schrijver en activist Ken Saro-Wiwa (1941-1995) lijkt niet veel over. In de mangrovebossen in het zuiden heersen zo’n 20 tot 50 verschillende rebellengroepen. Deze worden nu zelfs beschuldigd van het kidnappen van schoolkinderen.
